Glossary

Active insight widget. A widget that is not marked inactive. Inactive widgets are hidden in every course.

Alert threshold. A comparison on a metric (for example “greater than 1”) that turns the metric red with Flagged when it is met.

Brightspace Data Sets (BDS). The bulk data exports Brightspace produces for your institution. Rowseta syncs them.

Brightspace launch. Opening Rowseta or an insight widget from a link inside Brightspace. It signs the person in with LTI 1.3.

Configure. The link at the bottom of a widget for adjusting parameters and alerts in a course. See the fixed Configure rule.

Dataset. One Brightspace Data Set, such as Users or Course Access. See the Dataset guide.

Deployment. In Brightspace, the part of an LTI registration that decides which org units can launch the tool and what it may receive, such as the User ID.

Dynamic registration. Registering Rowseta in Brightspace by pasting one setup link, instead of copying each value by hand.

Evaluation. The free way to use Rowseta with your real data, with some limits.

Insight widget. A small card of metrics shown on a Brightspace course homepage.

Launch limit (launch ceiling). The fixed limit on a Brightspace launch member’s access before a recorded lift. See Roles and permissions.

Launch member. A member created by a Brightspace launch rather than an invitation.

LMS Account. A Brightspace user ID with at least 10 distinct combinations of course org unit and calendar day in Course Access and Course Access Log during the 12 months ending on the count’s As of date. Repeated activity by the same user in the same course on the same day counts once. The LMS Accounts report shows this count as of the last sync; Billing can show a newer daily count.

LTI. Learning Tools Interoperability, the standard Brightspace uses to launch external tools. Rowseta uses LTI 1.3.

LTI role. The role Brightspace sends with a launch, such as Instructor or Learner. See How Brightspace roles map to Rowseta.

Metric. One number on an insight widget, calculated from a published report.

Org unit. Any unit in Brightspace’s structure: the organization, a department, a semester, a course offering, a section. Each has an org unit ID.

Organization. Your institution’s space in Rowseta.

Owner. A built-in Rowseta role. See its default grants and fixed protections.

Parameter. A value in a report that people can change without editing the query, written as {{name}}.

People. Everyone in your Organization, managed under Settings > People.

Permission. One capability included in a role. See Roles and permissions.

Placement. A course where an insight widget has been opened. Listed in Courses using this widget.

Reach. How far a metric can see: each viewer’s own records, the launched course, or the whole Organization.

Report. A saved query over your synced data. Drafts are private; published reports can be run by others and used by widgets.

Role. A set of permissions. Every person has exactly one.

Rowseta address. The web address people use to sign in, such as big-brain.rowseta.com.

Service user. A Brightspace account used by an app rather than a person. Rowseta’s data connection signs in as one.

Sync. Copying the latest data from Brightspace into Rowseta. A Full sync downloads everything; an Update applies only changes.

System report. A read-only report Rowseta creates for you. Copy it to change it.

Template. A starting query for a new report.

User ID. The Brightspace user ID. Launches are refused unless the deployment’s Security Settings share it. See The User ID security setting.

View details. The link on a widget metric that opens the rows behind the number.
